Applied LLMs & Agents

This Winter School brings together researchers, practitioners, and educators for an intensive yet relaxed week in the Swiss Alps. Designed for participants who want to move beyond theory and get their hands on the full modern NLP stack — from embeddings and language models to retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, and the Model Context Protocol.

The format of this Winter School is intentionally applied. Sessions introduce concepts quickly and move to working code, real tools, and the kinds of architectural decisions you'll encounter in practice. Mornings and select afternoons are structured; the rest of the time is yours — whether that means skiing, fresh mountain air, or catching up on your own projects.

By the end of the week, you'll have gone from environment setup to building your own MCP server, and you'll leave with both a working toolkit and a clearer picture of where the field is heading.

By the end of this winter school, participants will be able to:

  • Set Up Modern AI Development Environments: Configure IDEs, virtual environments, and adopt "vibe coding" workflows to accelerate AI-assisted development.
  • Understand Core NLP & Embedding Concepts: Grasp the foundational ideas behind classical NLP tasks, word embeddings, and vector search methods like cosine similarity.
  • Navigate the LLM Ecosystem: Understand how Large Language Models work under the hood, their current capabilities, and how to identify high-value use cases for LLM applications.
  • Build Custom RAG Pipelines: Design and implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems to ground LLMs in external knowledge, including bringing and processing your own datasets.
  • Develop Agentic Workflows: Move beyond simple prompts to create AI agents capable of utilizing tools, skills, and advanced reasoning methods to solve complex tasks.
  • Implement Systems Integration with MCP: Understand and build your own Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to seamlessly connect LLMs with external data sources and tools.
  • Apply Fine-Tuning & Security Best Practices: Learn the basics of when and how to fine-tune your own models, while identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities unique to Generative AI.
  • Deploy Interactive AI Front-Ends: Rapidly prototype and share AI applications using Python-based UI frameworks like Gradio and Streamlit.
